The MDC Demonstration Forest is a "living classroom," designed to provide the public
with an outdoor learning experience about forestry, wildlife, soils, geology and
land use history. It was established in 1998 to showcases examples of how the MDC
manages its watershed forest lands to protect drinking water supplies, enhance wildlife
habitat, and improve the overall health and vigor of its forest resources.
The MDC Demonstration Forest is located at the West Hartford Filters Water Treatment
Facility on Route 4, Farmington Avenue, at the entrance to the visitor parking area.
The site is just a few miles from downtown Hartford and contains a rich diversity
of plants, animals and cultural features. The parking area can accommodate buses.
A printable map and driving directions are
available.
A free self-guided booklet is available at the Demonstration Forest Kiosk located
at the start of the Demonstration Forest Trail. The booklet provides detailed information
on the more than 20 stations located along the trail. The ¾ mile loop trail is easily
accessible, mostly flat, with a wood-chipped surface.
Visitors can learn how careful tree harvesting can improve forest health and diversity;
how a ruffed grouse uses a hollow cedar log to "drum" and call for a mate; witness
the results of a 200 million-year-old lava flow; and experience how forest ecosystems
are constantly changing over time.
Recreation visitors to The MDC's West Hartford Filters are encouraged to walk and
explore the Demonstration Forest and enjoy this unique educational experience.
