MDC TO HOST WETHERSFIELD COVE CLEANUP
HARTFORD, (September 29, 2008) - The Metropolitan District Commission (MDC) along with Hartford County residents will wade into Wethersfield Cove on October 4, 2008 as part of the 12th annual Connecticut River Watershed Source to Sea Cleanup. This is a one-day community cleanup of the Connecticut River and its tributaries. The four-state event is coordinated by the Connecticut River Watershed Council, a non-profit advocacy organization working to conserve and protect water quality and quantity, habitat, and recreational access within the entire Connecticut River watershed.
The MDC cleanup crew will start the cleanup at 8:00 a.m. at the Wethersfield Cove in Wethersfield. If you would like to participate as a volunteer, contact Melissa Bengtson, MDC Public Relations at 860-278-7850, ext. 3221 or the Connecticut River Watershed Council at cleanup@ctriver.org or (413) 772-2020, ext. 201. As a volunteer, you will be joined by thousands of other volunteers working watershed-wide on the same day to clean up our watershed.
Christine Luis-Schultz, CRWC’s Outreach Director who is organizing the Cleanup explained, “Last year’s volunteers hauled 50 tons of trash from 61 locations along streams and rivers in four states. We had over 2,000 participants, and this year we hope to have even more. The Cleanup is a great way to take care of your community and your favorite river.”
